What to have handy when you call

Just three things: the property's suburb, roughly when it was built (or “old — not sure” is fine), and what's prompted the call — a renovation, a purchase, a suspect material, a damaged sheet. That's enough for a fixed quote on the spot in most cases.

How booking works

Booking is deliberately simple. Nearly all of the asbestos testing Ballarat households and tradespeople ask us for starts with a single phone call or the quote form on this page. We talk through what you've found or what you're planning, recommend the right service, and give you a fixed price before anything is scheduled — there's no site visit just to work out a quote, and no obligation to go ahead.

From there we either book a time that suits you for an on-site inspection, or, if you only need one clearly identified piece checked, arrange for the sample to reach the laboratory. We're happy to talk you through safe bagging over the phone first so nothing is disturbed unnecessarily on the way.

What happens with your sample

Every sample is analysed at a NATA-accredited laboratory using polarised light microscopy, the Australian-standard method for identifying asbestos fibres. You'll receive a plain-English written report with the laboratory certificate attached, stating which materials contain asbestos, the condition they're in, and a clear recommendation — leave and manage, seal and monitor, or engage a licensed removalist. Standard analysis is two to five business days, with express turnaround available when a settlement or booked-in renovation can't wait.

Fees, reports and payment

Laboratory analysis typically runs $80–$150 per sample across the Victorian market, with discounts when several samples are tested together, and a full residential inspection generally falls in the $350–$700 range depending on the size and age of the property. We quote a fixed figure before starting, so the number you're told is the number you pay. Reports are issued in writing and are yours to hand straight to a builder, buyer, conveyancer, insurer or WorkSafe without any translation needed. Payment is due once the report is issued, and we can invoice a business or property manager directly where that's easier for your records.

Typical response times

Phone enquiries: answered or returned same business day. Standard bookings: usually within the week. Emergency identification: typically within 24 hours. Laboratory results: two to five business days standard, express available.

Getting ready for the visit

There's very little you need to do before we arrive. Clear, safe access to the area in question helps — move cars out of a tight driveway, unlock the shed or garage, and pen the dog somewhere comfortable. If the material is behind furniture, a whitegood or a stack of boxes, letting us know in advance means we can plan the right approach rather than working around it on the day. Where a suspect material is already damaged or crumbling, leave it undisturbed and simply point us to it; disturbing it to “tidy up” first is the one thing worth avoiding.

For tenants and property managers, we're comfortable coordinating access between owner, agent and occupant, and we can send the written report to whichever parties need it. For pre-purchase enquiries, it helps to have the agent's contact details so we can arrange a suitable inspection window before your finance or cooling-off date. Whatever the situation, a quick phone call sorts out the logistics faster than any form.

If it's an emergency

If a fibro sheet, fence or roof has just been broken by a storm, a fire or an accidental knock, don't sweep up or hose down the debris — that's exactly what spreads fibres. Call and we'll give you immediate make-safe advice over the phone and prioritise getting to you, usually within 24 hours. Keeping people and pets clear of the area until the material is assessed is the single most useful thing you can do in the meantime, and there's no need to attempt any cleanup yourself before we arrive.
